BY POPULAR DEMAND: Stacking Portrait Heads are Available for Purchase!

This past April, the Community Arts Gallery exhibited the work of their senior adult students who participated in the MetLife Creative Aging Program in late winter of 2009. The Creative Aging Program was led by Trisha Kyner and Herb Massie, administered by the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, and funded by MetLife Foundation.

The response to the exhibit was absolutely phenomenal! We received inquiries on a daily basis as to if the totems were available for purchase. After such tremendous response, we felt compelled to contact the students to ask if they would be interested in selling their totem sculptures. Like wildfire, the prospect of selling their artwork spread excitement and anticipation amongst this group of woman!

Today, Clayworks is proud and privileged to announce that a few of these highly sought after totems are available for purchase on our new virtual online store, eCeramica.

About the Artwork

These senior adults, all of which are women, have a long standing relationship with the Clayworks Community Arts Program resulting from several years of taking pottery workshops at our satellite locations. This exhibit allowed us to shine the spotlight on these talented women after they finished producing impressive raku and wood fired stoneware bowls, plates and narrative totems created during the MetLife Creative Aging workshop at the Pimlico Road Arts and Community Center.

The totem sculptures consist of hand built portrait heads that were formed, bisque fired, glazed and raku fired – then stacked atop of a ceramic base. The students drew inspiration from family members, lifetime friends, and some of the artful characters that can be seen on the totems were created from sheer imagination. While some represent narrative stories, others are symbolic of the bond between human relationships.

Programs and ceramic workshops like this offer these women so many priceless rewards ranging from learning, creative discovery and growth, friendships often described as “a second family”, as well as a place and time to escape personal hardships.

Now, by selling their artwork online to a nationwide audience, these women have a new found pride as observed in a recent interview with one student when asked for feedback about the Creative Aging Program,

“When I started making the head with all the bumps, I just liked the way it looked; I didn’t care what others thought. I’ve never cared what others thought, I make them because I like the way they look. But when they told me that someone was interested in buying my piece. WHOA. It really boosted my self esteem! Now I want to see what else I can do.”
