Your handcrafted pieces will last a long time with a little care.
Avoid thermal shock. Avoid rapid heating or cooling of handmade pottery. For example, do not run cold water over
a hot dish or take cold pottery and place it in a hot oven. Place a room temperature baking dish in a cool oven, then
turn the oven on. When pouring boiling liquids into a mug or teapot, placing a metal spoon in the container will absorb
some of the heat .
Oven
Do not place pottery in a pre-heated oven. Place the pottery in the oven then turn on the heat. Do not remove from
oven and place directly on a cold surface or in a refrigerator or freezer. It is not recommended that platters above 12”
in diameter be used in the oven at more than warming temperature. Food on the pottery going into the oven should
evenly cover the entire piece of pottery.
Broiler use is not recommended.
Stove top use is not recommended.
Microwave
Although pottery and ceramics can be used in carousel microwave ovens, we recommend that you heat your food in
microwave-safe dishes and then transfer it to your handcrafted piece. The reason is that if there is any part of the pottery
which is not glazed and moisture slips in and seeps behind the glazed areas in your ceramic piece, it can cause
problems when microwaved. Small rapid expansions and contractions could result and over time this will weaken the
integrity of the pottery.
Dishwasher
The term “dishwasher safe” means only that the glaze on the pottery does not react with the dishwasher detergent.
Load your pottery so it doesn’t hit against other dishes during the wash cycle. The heating, cooling, and general jostling
that takes place in the dishwasher can cause a previously minor or unnoticed crack to become more visible.
