About the Artist
Collette Smith Artist Statement My need to create appeared at a very young age. I enjoyed making art with whatever materials were available to me. One day I discovered clay in the raw where I played. I was captivated by the feel of this “dense mud” that I could push, squeeze, and manipulate into any shape I choose. Later while studying fashion Design in college, I took a sculpture class which again confirmed my interest in three dimensional forms. Finishing college my husband and I became Peace Corp volunteers in Cali, Colombia. I discovered the beautiful primitive functional pottery that we had the pleasure of using in our daily life there. Upon returning home, starting a family, clay was put on the back burner but was not forgotten. I started with one small step, an adult education course at the local high school. I was hooked, and began a lifelong quest into clay. Continuing to learn on my clay journey, I have been fortunate to have studied with many wonderful and sharing teachers.
