Description
QUATREFOIL Platter/lars westby
This piece crosses the boundaries between sculpture and function. Lars Westby’s Quatrefoil platter is boldly press molded from a tough red earthenware clay. Dry and non-reflective matte glazes compliment the geometry of the piece. Sure to provoke admiration and comment, this piece will easily take center stage on a board room table. At home, its formidable design and contrasting color combination will be the pièce de résistance to any room! Completely functional, it can be used for hors d’oeuvres or cheese platter.
About the Artist
Lars Westby is a resident artist of Baltimore Clayworks whose earthenware sculpture has been exhibited in prestigious galleries in the Baltimore area region and across the U.S. and Taiwan. Notably Lars was a recipient of a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship award in Craft both in 2005 and 2007. In spring 2007 he completed a 4 month artist residency at Tainan National University for the Arts in Tainan, Taiwan ROC.
Lars is inspired to transform objects from the everyday world into a world of his own making that speaks of ideas on visual beauty (as concept), playfulness, and mystery. This transformation of the known world results in organic abstract sculptures that derive from buoys, bobbers, propellers, toys, and industrial objects. These particular objects often relate to Lars' background of growing up in the industrial northeast and spending time on boats, as well as his interest in the dichotomy of function versus non function, art and craft, and the tactile nature of desire as a lure to draw in the viewer to experience his world.
Unless otherwise noted, the item pictured is a sample, and will not be the actual piece purchased. Each piece is unique, so while your purchase will be similar to the piece pictured, color, pattern, shape and size will vary.
