The shape and smooth surface are tactile pleasures, enhanced by your imagination when you contemplate the refracted light of the patterned glaze layers. This piece is so graphically and aesthetically interesting, it will immeasurably heighten your tea drinking experience.

Matt Hyleck’s stoneware, traditionally thrown on the potter’s wheel, has echoes of British jug pottery in its shape and form. This historical reference is the underlying design element in his contemporary functional pieces. Each piece reflects a sophistication and complexity in its surface which is created by Shino glaze. Matt’s work is known for its manifold structure and appearance. The multi textured, earthy color migration of this piece is derived from Matt’s skillful manipulation of one glaze family. This results in subtle yet complex notes of shimmering color. The patterns on the surface are created by overlapping two Shino glazes prior to firing and using “wax resist” brush work. The variations from matte to a crystal glassy surface are produced by dusting the unfired piece with pine, apple and locust ash. Not only is this tea bowl delightful to use, it also satisfies the aesthetics of the most discerning collector.
