Description
DANCING FLAME Bowl/
handmade pottery by
jim dugan
When used for soup or salad, this bowl by Jim Dugan will positively add a flair of sophistication to your next meal. The contrasts in colors and marks are reasons enough to display this piece on a shelf or bookcase for all to admire. The bowl is dove gray with rich overtones of copper orange and a spray of black.
Jim’s stoneware bears the flash and mark of the fires from the Clayworks’ Japanese style kiln, the Noborigama. This large two chambered wood firing kiln gives an unpredictable but characteristic warmth and richness to the tough and durable stoneware clay body. While Jim uses glazes for the interiors of pieces that will interface with liquids, the clay itself is bears a natural glaze created from the fly ash in the kiln as it marries itself to the silica in the clay.
His stoneware bowls have a natural decoration created by the wood firing process. The small white halos around the rim are indicative of tiny balls of clay used to separate the pieces in the firing. This is a tumble stack process that is unique to wood firing. The calligraphic marking is made by a flying brush stroke of iron oxide masterfully applied just before firing.
Unless otherwise noted, the item pictured is a sample, and will not be the actual piece purchased. Each piece is unique, so while your purchase will be similar to the piece pictured, color, pattern, shape and size will vary.
