Description
FLUTTER Vase/
handmade pottery by
collette smith
Elegance beams from the streamlined silouette of this handmade vase by Collette Smith. The rich melding of deep reds, blues and golds against the pale green entertains the imagination. A whimsical butterfly floats seamlessly against the pool of beautiful tones cascading along the exterior. Reaching down into the belly of the vase is a coating of rich ruby red. This work of pottery is the perfect choice when wishing to add some sophistication and beauty to a room.
About the Artist
Collette Smith is a resident artist of Baltimore Clayworks who seriously entered into a studio career after spending two years in Cali, Colombia, as a Peace Corps volunteer. She has taught and exhibited her sumptuously glazed functional pots at Baltimore Clayworks; Silvermine Guild of Artists in New Canaan, Connecticut; Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences in Loveladies, New Jersey; and at the Clay Art Center, Port Chester, New York. All of her handmade pottery is thrown and then altered. The altering is accomplished by throwing parts, base and walls then attaching when wet. She also darts, cuts, squeezes and manipulates the clay to create square or oval forms. A master with glazes, Collette uses several glazes on her celadon. She uses a formula of glaze application and latex over on her work. Then applies slips which are sprayed again with another coat of glaze. The finishing touch is a sprinkling of wood ash to help blend the colors.
