TOTEM/
handmade sculpture by
deborah vonhendricks
This totem, by Deborah Vonhendricks, was featured during our recent exhibition of raku and wood fired stoneware bowls, plates and narrative totems by senior adult women at Pimlico Road Arts and Community Center. The Creative Aging Program was led by Trisha Kyner and Herb Massie, administered by the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, and funded by MetLife Foundation.
About the Artist
Born and raised in Baltimore, Deborah Vonhendrics is no stranger to the arts. Though she only started taking classes with the Baltimore Clayworks’ Community Arts program a few years ago, she used to teach art classes at a daycare center and has always been a creative person. Her talents rage from painting to crocheting and knitting, quilting, and even doll-making.
Deborah first became interested in clay when she felt the need for a new creative outlet and she quickly grew to love sculpting. This piece in particular is a favorite of Deborah’s because it was one of the first times she used the raku firing method. Though she originally intended for one of the heads on her totem to look like that of a jewelry-clad pirate, she changed course slightly throughout the project which made the whole process exciting and challenging for her.
Deborah continues to take clay classes through the Community Arts program which she describes as one big, supportive family.
