Description
TOTEM/
handmade sculpture by
lenora pullen
This totem, by Lenora Pullen, was featured during our recent exhibition of raku and wood fired stoneware bowls, plates and narrative totems by senior adult women at Pimlico Road Arts and Community Center. The Creative Aging Program was led by Trisha Kyner and Herb Massie, administered by the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, and funded by MetLife Foundation.
About the Artist
Lenora Pullen, native to Baltimore, had not experienced art classes before joining the ceramics workshops conducted by the Community Arts Program of Baltimore Clayworks. They introduced Lenora to her artistic side, which was something unfamiliar to her.
In creating her portrait heads, Lenora really didn't have anyone in mind when shaping the facial features - they were purely born from her hands and imagination. The most exciting part of the process was that she had no idea how her sculpture would turn out. The rewards she experiences when working with clay is continual amazement and intrigue of its potential. The forms, shapes and end results are endless - which keeps Lenora excited for the next project that comes her way.
In these Clayworks workshops, like the MetLife Foundation Creative Aging Program, Lenora has found a sense of camaraderie, encouragement and joy. Fellow students have been instrumental in making this such a wonderful experience, as well as a source of inspiration for her.
