Description
TOTEM/
handmade sculpture by
ruth binsky
This totem, by Ruth Binsky, was featured during our recent exhibition of raku and wood fired stoneware bowls, plates and narrative totems by senior adult women at Pimlico Road Arts and Community Center. The Creative Aging Program was led by Trisha Kyner and Herb Massie, administered by the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, and funded by MetLife Foundation.
About the Artist
Baltimore native Ruth Binsky is the owner of A Quiet Place, a Christian bookstore and gift shop in Howard Park. She became involved in the Baltimore Clayworks’ Community Arts Program about five years ago after seeing a flyer at a local business. Ruth had little experience in the arts prior to her first class and never considered herself a creative person, but since that time she has learned a lot and come to recognize her artistic ability.
Her piece “Space is the Place” was not a project she was particularly excited or inspired about in the beginning. Ruth admits to struggling in the beginning, but over the course of the project, she found herself enjoying the process. For this piece in particular, her creative inspiration was based on aliens and outer space.
There are many rewards, that differ from person to person, in ceramics. A popular one is the element of surprise. Once the portrait heads left Ruth's hands, she wasn't sure what to expect after the raku firing. The anticipation followed by seeing how beautifully her sculpture turned out after the firing was a thrill.
Displayed in her home and store, Ruth enjoys the pottery she's produced in the Baltimore Clayworks’ senior adult programs, and intends to pursue ceramics by taking more classes at Clayworks.
In addition to attending classes through the Community Arts Program, Ruth also designs and sells her own trivets at the silent auction at her grandchildren’s school every year.
