Description
MYSTIQUE Yunomi/
handmade pottery by
collette smith
Once seen, you will soon covet this porcelain hand thrown yunomi by Collette Smith. The rich melding of colors are seductive and mesmerizing. A draping of deep blues, yellow golds and ruby reds are unleashed upon a glassy pale green surface. As all of these beautiful tones drip down the exterior, the inside of the cup is dressed in a vibrant ruby red. Reaching up towards the top of the rim, the red is met with a striking bright blue. This handmade ceramic art work is a thrill for the eyes, and will be enjoyed by all senses when used for juice, wine or your drink of choice.
About the Artist
Collette Smith is a resident artist of Baltimore Clayworks who seriously entered into a studio career after spending two years in Cali, Colombia, as a Peace Corps volunteer. She has taught and exhibited her sumptuously glazed functional pots at Baltimore Clayworks; Silvermine Guild of Artists in New Canaan, Connecticut; Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences in Loveladies, New Jersey; and at the Clay Art Center, Port Chester, New York. All of her handmade pottery is thrown and then altered. The altering is accomplished by throwing parts, base and walls then attaching when wet. She also darts, cuts, squeezes and manipulates the clay to create square or oval forms. A master with glazes, Collette uses several glazes on her celadon. She uses a formula of glaze application and latex over on her work. Then applies slips which are sprayed again with another coat of glaze. The finishing touch is a sprinkling of wood ash to help blend the colors.
