About the Artist
Pat Halle Trained by friend and mentor Mary Nyburg, with periods of study at Penland and Haystack, Pat Halle has been a studio potter for over thirty years in Baltimore, making primarily functional porcelain pots. More recently her work includes porcelain and white stoneware clay forms fired at low temperatures in sawdust, copper, and salt; drums, funerary ware, covered containers, and wall pieces, whose surfaces are decorated by the smoke and flame. “I have been making pots now for forty years. Making bowls, washing clothes, raising kids, going to work, coming home, pulling handles, wedging clay. Doing the same things again and again over so many years. Curious. It’s not boring. The passion deepens. Fermented and seasoned by time and seeing. Centering takes the same force as always, yet the concentration is different. Without ‘can I or can’t I?’ or ‘how well this time?’ there is room for another experience. It’s a space… a moment and opportunity created by years of applied practice... invisible, maybe even imaginary, hopefully imaginary, not to be filled trying to understand it or describe it. Meanwhile, that delicious feel of the clay in my hands and the wheel always turning.”
